After over 7 years as a freelance developer, I share my experience and advice for successfully transitioning to freelance. This guide covers practical, administrative and strategic aspects.
Legal status
In France, several options are available:
- Micro-enterprise: ideal for starting out. Simplified accounting, reduced charges, but revenue cap (€77,700 for services)
- EURL/SASU: more suitable when revenue exceeds the micro cap. Personal asset protection.
- Umbrella company (Portage): to test freelancing without administrative constraints
Setting your rates
The daily rate is the basis of freelance pricing:
- Junior (0-3 years): €300-450/day
- Mid-level (3-5 years): €450-600/day
- Senior (5+ years): €600-800/day
- Expert/Lead (7+ years): €700-1000+/day
Don't forget to account for: social charges, unpaid leave, prospecting time, continuous training and equipment.
Finding your first clients
The most effective prospecting channels:
- Malt: the leading French platform for tech freelancers
- LinkedIn: direct prospecting and personal branding
- Personal network: word-of-mouth remains the #1 channel
- Portfolio website: an essential professional showcase (like this one!)
- Meetups and conferences: IRL networking
Essential tools
- Invoicing: Freebe, Henrri, or Abby
- Project management: Notion, Linear or Trello
- Communication: Slack, Discord
- Contracts: templates adapted to tech freelancing
- Accounting: an accountant specialized in freelance/micro
Managing your activity daily
Some tips from my experience:
- Diversify your clients (never depend on just one)
- Maintain a 3-6 month cash reserve
- Invest in continuous training
- Develop your personal branding (blog, GitHub, conferences)
- Take care of your client relationships (communication, meeting deadlines)
Conclusion
Freelancing is a demanding but rewarding adventure. With good preparation and a clear strategy, you can build a fulfilling and profitable career. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
