After over 7 years as a freelance developer, I share my experience and advice for successfully transitioning to freelance. This guide covers practical, administrative and strategic aspects.

Legal status

In France, several options are available:

  • Micro-enterprise: ideal for starting out. Simplified accounting, reduced charges, but revenue cap (€77,700 for services)
  • EURL/SASU: more suitable when revenue exceeds the micro cap. Personal asset protection.
  • Umbrella company (Portage): to test freelancing without administrative constraints

Setting your rates

The daily rate is the basis of freelance pricing:

  • Junior (0-3 years): €300-450/day
  • Mid-level (3-5 years): €450-600/day
  • Senior (5+ years): €600-800/day
  • Expert/Lead (7+ years): €700-1000+/day

Don't forget to account for: social charges, unpaid leave, prospecting time, continuous training and equipment.

Finding your first clients

The most effective prospecting channels:

  • Malt: the leading French platform for tech freelancers
  • LinkedIn: direct prospecting and personal branding
  • Personal network: word-of-mouth remains the #1 channel
  • Portfolio website: an essential professional showcase (like this one!)
  • Meetups and conferences: IRL networking

Essential tools

  • Invoicing: Freebe, Henrri, or Abby
  • Project management: Notion, Linear or Trello
  • Communication: Slack, Discord
  • Contracts: templates adapted to tech freelancing
  • Accounting: an accountant specialized in freelance/micro

Managing your activity daily

Some tips from my experience:

  • Diversify your clients (never depend on just one)
  • Maintain a 3-6 month cash reserve
  • Invest in continuous training
  • Develop your personal branding (blog, GitHub, conferences)
  • Take care of your client relationships (communication, meeting deadlines)

Conclusion

Freelancing is a demanding but rewarding adventure. With good preparation and a clear strategy, you can build a fulfilling and profitable career. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
